There are those bands that simply defy genre classification, bands that transcend limits and definitions. Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers are a prime example, not only because they blend a vast range of different genres into their music, but also and especially because they do it so well and without one genre or niche being dominant throughout their material; instead they sift between genres as if they were nothing but veils of mist (and that’s what I think they are, or should be). Combining Country, Rockabilly, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues, Blues Rock, Folk, Hard Rock, Punk and probably half a dozen other genres their music, Colonel J.D. Wilkes & Co. create something that simply cannot be described with just a few words. Or maybe somebody can, but I don’t even pretend that I’m that guy.

Believe comes across as almost a gospel-record, but more than to the lord above a gospel to the South. This is the music of the myth-filled south of the United States, that no man’s land between Heaven and Hell where the devil and god do battle, the people being not so much their pawns as independent actors going whichever way. One man begs mercy from the lord above whilst the other signs away the soul to the lord below. And though the intentions may start out as good (the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, eh?), sometimes you end up in a six-foot deep bed calling for the devil to break you out of your casket for vengeance. Where’s the devil when you need him?

Oh yes. This is the strange, deranged, delightful and oh so addictive world Th’ Legendary Shack*Shakers paint with their music. And the music… the music, ranging from heavy bluesy Rock to more Folk/Country-tinged moments, but always remaining strong, unique and consistent in spite of all the variety, is simply outstanding. Not one weak track here. The good Colonel sounds like a bible thumpin’ preacher high on weed and whiskey or just filled with the spirit, his vocal output ranging from more typical singing to semi-maniacal ranting and raving. I might add that he’s got an exceptionally strong voice as well, his style strong and captivating. Full of that Rock ‘n’ Roll charm. Combined with the odd, confusing yet catchy lyrics, you’re in for one Hell of a ride. Believe it.

The bottom line is simple. Like I already said, I can’t describe this music well enough with mere words to do it justice. Suffice to say, it grooves, it rocks, it still knocks my socks off after dozens of listens, it makes me want to rage and rave, jump about like a madman, it makes me sing along, it keeps on playing in my head all the time, and it’s one of the best fucking albums I’ve heard in a long while. Whatever your musical preferences are, I urge you… no, command you to check this out right now. Believe me when I say it: this is an amazing disc. And they’re just jumpin’ Jim Dandies doin’ a Hillbilly boogaloo.
