3/5

On this debut demo, the Canadian one man-band Nekantropy present three songs (and an intro) of rocking, not too complicated Black Metal. Foglords isn’t very original, but it’s got some good riffs and the songs are quite good. The playing is also quite adequate, although sometimes, such as in the slower sections of the last song, Amongst These Walls Of Lonely Ruins, rather clumsy...

The first actual song on the demo, Rolling Plains Of Immeasurable Unlight, is my favorite track of the demo. It features some good guitars, and the drum machine is programmed well and sounds decent. It doesn’t sound too artificial, and doesn’t bother the listening.

On the second song, The Dead Have Come, the drum machine sounds worse... it’s not one of the worst, and it isn’t actually disturbing, but it’s too loud and sounds more artifical than on Rolling Plains Of Immeasurable Unlight. In general, too, The Dead Have Come isn’t as good, with the riffs being less interesting. The same actually goes for the rest of the song. It’s not a bad song, but neither is it special in any way. An okay track.

The and final song, Among These Walls Of Lonely Ruin begins with a slow part, which, as stated above, is rather clumsy. Actually, it’s so clumsy that it’s a bit disturbing. The drums and guitar are off synch and, well, it just sounds amateurish. Luckily, things get better when the pace speeds up, and it almost reaches the quality of the first song.

The sound quality of the demo is good, with the only real problems being the vocals, which are a bit too loud, and that there are jumps in the sound levels between the songs, which is annoying since the first song is rather silent, at least when compared to the last one, which is much louder than the previous tracks.

As a whole, this is a promising first demo. Even though there’s some clumsy bits in the playing and some things could surely have been done better, Foglords clearly shows that Foglord Gwalikath has talent and vision, and is also an able vocalist. The vocals actually deserve special mention, being quite powerful, and they sound like mr. Gwalikath was drunk when recording them (which he apparently was). They are too loud in the mix, which is a bit disturbing, but otherwise they are good.

In the end, Foglords is a decent demo, that has some flaws, but is still enjoyable, and as stated above, shows promise in Nekantropy. It is with interest I await future releases.
