A New Beginning

"We got stars directing our fate and we're praying it's not too late 'cuz we know we're fallin' from grace...MILLENIUM." -Robbie Williams

So he sang, and it's one of my favourite lines in pop songs. 'It's got a ring to it' as they say. Exactly the thing that the new The Rasmus and HIM singles DON'T have in their lyrics.

On and on and on again:"No fear, destination darkness." On and on and on again:"Rip out the wings of a butterfly." Yes, I know that a chorus is always a chorus, and you can do it ten times per song but what the hell am I supposed to think when SUPPOSEDLY the wiz-kids of finnish lyricists can't do a metaphorical lyric right. It's the most simple thing.

First, you need a good lyric START TO FINISH. Not some odd things about blood & wine or girl do this, girl do that. I WANT LYRICS. No bullshit, this. It ain't too hard to try and make a decent, flowing piece of lyric before you go ta studio and do it there.
Second, you don't REPEAT too much. It's TOO EASY. Easy is not the way you should go. Go DIFFICULT. USE words. Don't just spit 'em out like you're forced to. USE them. I for one want to know what the hell somebody's singing ABOUT. Don't you?

Hmm...I'm not being cruel, am I? Maybe I could have just said it like "I don't like these new lyrics" but what's the fun in that?

This is a notion that means there ain't nothing to be proud of when you write a lyric that doesn't speak for itself. A lyric that's so full of metaphor that you can hear it differently a hundred times and see it meaning different things a hundred times. A lyric that repeats itself? A lyric that says nothing personal to anybody? A lyric that hints about unfinished business, songs that have been 'settled for'.

They're successful bands, both of 'em. That don't change. But the lyrics are a thing that's separate from the whole band. Sometimes writers' pride gets the best of them and they don't ask for someone else to write them. But I expect more from 'em these days, anyway.

Hit me with comments if you like or don't like what I'm babbling here...
