Lyrics
Ten years ago I set a-roamin on the seas
with a little lifeboat that needed welding at the seems
I had a friend with me named Lee, we had known since we were kids
I knew he'd live or die for me, I might do the same for him
We built a wooden mast and a sail to attract the wildest winds
and threw a piece of concrete in the boat, so we could anchor it
On the shore we shook our hands, got drunk and then set sail
We sang hymns till dawn, with God on our side how could we ever fail
Air on the ocean calms and soothes you
Times of day don't matter now
And you hear whispers of the Gods
from up high and underground, they are calling
in silence so profound
A week later we'd find land, t'was an island like a dream
One thousand women ran to the shore to greet ol' Lee and me
They took us to the woods and served us well and fair
and built a great bonfire that threw sparkles in the air
But Lee and I could not stay too long, we had set some higher goals
We'd heard of some nutcase priest who was hiding behind holes
We felt it was our fate and duty to sail and help him out
Besides we were dying to learn what the holes were all about
Air on the ocean calms and soothes you
Times of day don't matter now
And you hear whispers of the Gods
from up high and underground, they are calling
in silence so profound
Down by the pond she died, I'd had enough
With seven rocks I squashed her pain away
Down by the pond she died, so I try let go
and watch the sea go on and on
Well in June we ran out of wind and food so we had to find a shore
and a town where we could buy some fish, more water and a whore
But at the place we got to first Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
tied us both to our mast and did some evil deeds
A few days later, thank god, old Nick found someone else
There were some big guys landing at the shore, one looked like Orson Welles
Lee and I thought about giving up on the priest as we were fixing our mast pole
Lord knows that both of us now had enough hole issues of our own
Air on the ocean calms and soothes you
Times of day don't matter now
And you hear whispers of the Gods
from up high and underground, they are calling
in silence so profound
Down by the pond she died, I'd had enough
With seven rocks I squashed her pain away
Down by the pond she died, so I try let go
and watch the sea go on and on
On our last leg, we discovered the eight sea
There were bright colors everywhere, we were as stoned as we could be
Where Lee could find that stuff out there I still can not tell
And who cares where the fun comes from when the party never ends
But then I had to quit that stuff 'cause we were losing our clout
Lee could not do the same, so I had to dump him out
When I was left there all alone I thought I'd head back home
I tried to call my baby on the phone to ask her how was the road
So you want to know the point and lesson of this, my friend
Well, what's the point in anything? if you can tell me I'll comprehend
Everywhere I look there's a pointless story being told
But at least I know mine is, I don't need to be told so
Air on the ocean calms and soothes you
Times of day don't matter now
And you hear whispers of the Gods
from up high and underground, they are calling
in silence so profound
Down by the pond she died, I'd had enough
With seven rocks I squashed her pain away
Down by the pond she died, so I try let go
and watch the sea go on and on
